I wrote the poem "Traffic Song" in 1989 and
I have been waiting for an opportunity to publish it since then. When
Mike Retallick asked me to make something for his new premises at Sydney
City Gas, that opportunity had arrived. This work
has provided a marriage of poetry and sculpture. Whether either one of
them has suffered in their relationship I leave my judges to determine.
From my view my work as a sculptor, the poem and this particular site
made for a convergence. How often does sculpture and poetry meaningfully
combine. In my experience hardly ever. That is why I have worked so hard
to bring this work to fruition. I wrote the poem ten years ago.
That it may in turn begin to make any kind of impression on the debate
locally and generally about traffic or the expression of a community's
voice or even what art mighty accidentally do.
