This drawing was produced by Ron Robertson-Swann in 2004, as a thank you to Armando and Gemma who hosted the sculptors for their monthly dinner for many (15?) years at Buon Riccordo in Paddington.
For me it is a delightful drawing that presents a room, a table, a menu (sic) of sculptors and the sculptors themselves who are presented as slabs of protein enriched colour. I cannot determine who is who but the conversation is lively. Several sculptors are effusive as we always were. Others are listening. One of two have dozed off. Sometimes our manners were found to be wanting.
The pleasure we found was such that we continued to come, every month, year after year. ‘Inevitably’ finally did present itself, like death and taxes, and the dinners stopped.
We are mostly still alive though, presenting our sculptural arguments to the big sculptural conversation.
We mostly all have a go at being really great for a while, until we are exhausted or a new sculptural thesis is presented and we are all invigorated again!
Ron’s show of new work is opening tonight at Australian Galleries. We are all challenging in our different ways, but while the sculptural conversation persists we are all the same siblings at the same dining table.
