On Reflection

It is of no special account.
I thought I was making a bridge.
There were enough people, hands held,
To reach to the other side.

But really,

I was mainly coming to terms
With the snake I had just seen.

We never know what we do.
Sometimes, after the event,
Some truth emerges,
Which sheds a different light.
